Oh God,
Where do Syrian children sleep? Only you know each troubled bed. Mine are safe under quilts and treasured blankies, wrapped in the security of home. Mine are sleeping deeply, even as I wrestle with the midnight thoughts and images I can't escape.
Don't let me escape them.
Don't let me forget them.
The world is a broken puzzle, with too many pieces missing. Blown to bits.
What do I do? What do we do?
I don't know the answers to the questions in their eyes, the cries in their sleep, the fear in their forms.
But I do know this...
Jesus, you were a child refugee, fleeing the evil of hell's forces loosed. Where did you sleep, on the run to Egypt? Did you know the terror that sped your parents' steps day after night after day? Would I have recognized you if you slept on my doorstep?
Jesus, you spoke of loving our enemies, and if ever we really needed to figure out what on this blasted earth you meant, now is the time. I do know love means risk. Love means the almost sure possibility of having to utter those heavy words, "Father, forgive them."
Jesus, you knew the bloodiest torture of your time. You know the nightmares they relive. You weep over their crumbled cities. You weep over those who reject your way, and send these children into the cold night. You weep over hearts harder than the trampled ground. You weep for each child who has lost a home, each home that has lost a child.
Jesus, you pronounced blessing on the peacemakers. How can anyone make peace with trembling hands, and when the recipe seems forgotten? Yet you spit into the dust and made a balm for healing. You give eyes to see. You took a severed ear and restored it to your enemy. You give ears to hear. You took everything hell had to throw at you, and you made salvation.
I am no miracle worker.
But I know the only way to take any step, to make any peace, to break any curse, is to stay close to you. To embrace you as the child, alone and frightened. To look into their eyes and pray, and really mean it - give me eyes to see. Give me ears to hear. Don't let me escape them.
My children stir. They murmur and roll over. I will tiptoe close and tuck the covers around them, murmuring my own prayers of gratitude and blessing. And as I place my hands on them, I will pray for the others.
Yes, prayer may only be a beginning. But as we go forward, we can never leave it behind. For it is in prayer that we step close to Jesus and let him cross our borders.
Come, Lord Jesus.

Intercessions: God of tears and dust
O God, most gracious and compassionate, you hold our frailty in your hands. Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief, you know our weaknesses. You gather us in your arms, tenderly wash the mingled tears and dust, and fold us in your keeping. You weep with us. You weep for the whole weary world, swollen with the sting of death.
O God, most gracious and compassionate, you take our burdens in your hands. You hold the things we cannot carry, and carry them away this night.

Intercessions - November 6, 2013
God of the sleepless nights,
Of the weary restless, the heavy-lidded, heavy-laden ones.
Give your beloved rest. You who neither sleep nor slumber, soothe insomniac
hearts with the steady beating of your own. Sing over the tousled beds, the
troubled heads, till all the tangled soul wanderings run smooth and still. Rock
away the little fears, the hidden tears, till every child can sleep in heavenly
peace. Keep our nights in the hollow of your hand, that when we awake we will
be satisfied, still with you.
Amen.

When you don't know how to pray
When you don’t know how to pray. . .
Tears can be prayers, dripping from a bruised and
smoldering heart, silent messages collected in His bottle. He knows the
language of tears.
Groans can be prayers, too deep for words, yet the Spirit
sighs along with you, and He knows the mind of God, the will of God, and
intercedes for His purpose. He doesn’t need words to know your heart.
Drops of blood can be prayers, the stress and the
sacrifice, laid on the altar before the Priest who ever lives and pleads for
you. Because of His pain, yours is lifted to the Father in perfect
intercession.
When you don’t know how to pray, there is One who does,
One who is praying right along with you. You can have peace that surpasses
understanding, knowing it is not your words and your work that matter, but His
Word and His Work.
When you don’t know how to pray, pray past the how and into the Who – He hears.

Father of the Lost,
Find your wandering ones, your weak and weary ones. Show them that the way to be found is to be hidden in
you. When they feel like they’re about to lose it, may they
let go of the very last thing, so that losing all is gaining all. May they let
go so as to be held. May they know the strength and sufficiency of your
intimacy. Let them be found in the mysterious miracle of you in
them and they in you. Father of the Lost, you seek us first, and in this is our
salvation.
Amen.

God of grace and truth,
Draw near to those caught in self-spun webs of deception. In your grace bring them to the end of their lies, cut to the quick with your two-edged sword, rightly divide between light and darkness. Reveal the wages of sin. In your truth look them in the eye and speak reality into their tangled souls, the Word that quickens and restores. Reveal the gift of life. Oh Truth most terribly graceful, reach between the bars and set them free.
Amen

Intercessions - April 1
Father of peace and healing,
You are the one who breaks insurmountable dividing walls. Make a footbridge of peace over troubled waters. Where disappointment and bitterness wedge souls apart, bind them together with cords of mercy and the balm of Gilead. Be near to the brokenhearted, and save the ones who are crushed in spirit. Gather their pieces in tenderness and speak healing to their brokenness. May your gentleness make them great. Restore souls and rescue the estranged from division. Be their peace.
Amen

intercessions - february 6
Our Father,
Be close to all your children who feel rejected. When they are confused about who they are, help them find their true selves in You. Sing over them so they may hear Your voice above all others. Call them by the name You have given them, the name that brings life and wholeness and peace. Form your family image in them, and let them know they are loved.
Amen.

Father of Lights,
Help us to weather the dark and dreary days of winter and forgive our disinterest in the life you call us to. Let us not become bitter over our little trials and disappointments. Help us to resist wrapping ourselves in darkness of our own making, but rather embrace every good and perfect gift. Show us the light of your grace and lead us to love the cold and weary around us.
Amen.

intercessions - december 14
God,
I pray, not for, but against. I pray against the enemies of our souls who would destroy the life of the young. I pray against loneliness and despair. I pray against the evil which sets itself as a rival to your love. I pray your love would charge in with banners blazing, would show itself victorious, would show itself to those in doubt and darkness. Be quick to save, God of hosts.
Amen.

God of comfort,
Be near to all those who are sick and dying. Only You can truly comfort those who are facing death, but thank you for letting us participate in your comforting presence. Surround the frail ones with your peace and ease their loneliness. Bring human hands close by to touch and tend to them. Make the arms of the caregivers strong, but do not let their hearts grow hard in the sight of another's pain. Assure them all of your love which is stronger than death, and steady them in the many rushing waters of uncertain days. We look to the restoration of all things in Christ, in Your time.
Amen.

May the God who never sleeps make your sleep sweet tonight, whenever you get there. May He yet provide a pillow and send His angels as your covering. May He watch over your weary body and call your dust to life when the day dawns.

intercessions
My friend Travis suggested I write out my "intercessions." I'm not very good at them. But maybe this will help me pray.
God of travellers,
I'm in Union Station today, and there are so many people. I don't know how to pray for them all. I pray they will get where they're going safely and that they will find home or hospitality at their journey's end. I pray your grace will sit beside them on the train, and that they will be able to see you. I pray they will hear a whisper of your voice amidst the noisy gongs and clanging cymbols. Help me to love the ones I rub shoulders with, espeically the pushy impatient ones and the ones who talk too loudly on their cell phones beside me. To my friends on the GO train, let me be an aroma, like the smell of Cinnabon in the concourse, the sweet smell of bread and love. Keep us all safe and bring us home to you.
Amen.
